How to Sign Up to Masterworks in 3 Easy Steps

Having gone through the sign up process already, I thought I could use my experience to write a step-by-step guide on how to sign up to Masterworks.

There are only a few steps involved, but in this day and age, we are so used to a no-contact sign-up process. This is not the case with Masterworks. In a way, they are a little old-school because they require a financial advisor to make phone contact with you to ensure that you receive the appropriate level of financial advice before you decide to invest. The personal touch is something you will appreciate if you don’t have a ton of art knowledge or are unsure on what exact artworks you should be diversifying your funds across. Still, even with this extra step, signing up only takes 30 minutes of your time.

How to sign up to Masterworks:

Step 1: Apply for Membership

Applying for membership takes less than 5 minutes, and only require a few details, including:

  • Name
  • Email
  • Phone number
  • and a login password

Masterworks will also want to collect some information regarding your investor status at this point too, so be prepared to answer a few short-answer questions, including:

  • How much would you consider investing in blue-chip art?
  • When are you planning to invest?

At the end of Step 1, you will choose a day and time for a 15-minute phone call with one of Masterworks’ financial advisors.

After selecting a day and time from the preset menu, you will be able to see the latest artworks that Masterworks has acquired with shares still available.

Step 2: Quick Phone Call

This process is actually quite simple and only takes about 15 minutes. It’s important to note that the advisors are non-commissioned, meaning their advice is unbiased.

The advisor will first explain how Masterworks acquire and securitize artwork, giving you an understanding of the background work involved in sourcing their blue-chip art.

Afterward, they will ask whether you consider yourself an aggressive, balanced, or conservative investor. This information is used to determine which artworks might align with your investing strategy. However, you are not obligated to follow the advisor’s suggestions and can instead choose to invest in the artworks you prefer or have already set your heart on.

Step 3: Activate Your Membership

The Masterworks advisor will then transfer you to the On-Boarding department, where your membership will be activated once you transfer an initial deposit.

This process takes about 3 to 5 minutes, after which you will be issued shares in the artwork/s you have chosen.

Now that you have secured ownership of your first blue chip artwork, you will then have complete access to explore the Masterworks platform as an exclusive member. This includes access to the secondary marketplace, where you can acquire shares in previously listed artworks (currently only available for US citizens though).

Additionally, you will be able to view upcoming acquisitions and have priority access to invest in them.

Your financial advisor remains available for free if you require further advice about the appropriateness of certain artwork for your portfolio in the future.

And that’s it! That’s how you sign up to Masterworks. It may seem like it is a little difficult before you start, but I hope the above makes the process seem as easy as it really is.
